Sustainability Strategy 2030

As part of a holistic approach to sustainability management, we at TUI Cruises integrate environmental, social, and economic sustainability within the company. This makes sustainability-related processes and activities across the entire organization visible and measurable, enabling internal and external reporting.

With growing awareness of sustainability in society, the EU’s Green Deal, ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) requirements for investment and financing projects, and the introduction of ambitious standards for ship operations by the IMO (International Maritime Organisation), there is currently a great deal of regulatory, political and communicative momentum in the field of sustainability.
The Sustainability Department is responsible for the long-term and systematic management of all sustainability issues across the entire company, including its two brands, Mein Schiff® and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.

The aim of integrated sustainability management is to achieve a long-term and continuous improvement in the company’s sustainability performance.
In addition to implementing the 2030 Sustainability Strategy and the associated itinerary for decarbonisation, the department’s specific responsibilities also include managing sustainability-related reporting requirements.

As a staff function, the Sustainability Department reports directly to the management team and is therefore able to influence all areas of the organisation, ensuring short lines of communication to the decision-making level. The establishment of this specialist unit gives the issue a cross-functional role within the company, thereby improving collaboration with all departments and the internal sustainability champions. The environmental officers on board the Mein Schiff® fleet ensure close links with the ship’s day-to-day operations.

TUI Cruises’ sustainability department benefits from the long-standing expertise of its two parent companies, TUI Group and Royal Caribbean Cruise Ltd. (RCL). Within the TUI Group, the Group’s own sustainability department actively supports TUI Cruises’ sustainability management and makes its network available to the company. This ensures group-wide communication and constructive cooperation.

Awards won

Cruise Ship Interior Award 2023 | ‘Most Sustainable Interior’ category

PO Design has won a Cruise Ship Interior Award for its design of the ‘Grööne Bar’. The concept and redesign were carried out in collaboration with TUI Cruises. The ‘Grööne Bar’ is a space that has been designed with sustainability in mind and provides information on the sustainability of the Mein Schiff® fleet. For example, the carpet is made from recycled materials, and the wooden figures have been carved from old half-timbered beams. The unique origami trees and lounge music featuring sounds of nature transport guests out on the high seas to a forest glade.

CruiseCopenhagen Sustainability Award 2019

In 2019, TUI Cruises was presented with the CruiseCopenhagen Sustainability Award in recognition of its work towards developing sustainable cruising and its efforts to reduce its environmental impact in Copenhagen. As sustainability is a top priority for the Danish cruise industry, the CruiseCopenhagen Sustainability Award is presented every year. The award, developed by CruiseCopenhagen’s more than 60 partners, recognises initiatives and companies that contribute to a more sustainable cruise industry in Denmark.

myclimate Award 2018

Thanks to its wide-ranging sustainability strategy, TUI Cruises was recognised in 2018 as a “pioneer in the cruise industry in sustainability and climate protection”. The report highlighted the wide range of measures being implemented to reduce CO₂ emissions both on board ships and on land. In addition, TUI Cruises offers guests the opportunity to offset the emissions from their cruises and any associated flights.

EcoTrophea 2017

TUI Cruises has been awarded the German Travel Association’s (DRV) Sustainability Award for its project to reduce food waste on board the Mein Schiff® fleet: Between late 2016 and mid-2018, a plan was developed in collaboration with the charity United Against Waste e. V. to reduce food waste on board. The jury particularly praised the way guests and crew members were involved. Since then, efforts have been made on board to raise awareness of this issue and to encourage the responsible use of available resources.
