Roadmap to Decarbonization
Climate protection as a fundamental goal of our sustainability strategy
The core element of the Sustainability Strategy 2030 is our Climate Protection Roadmap. It focuses on ambitious, absolute climate-protection objectives (science-based targets), introducing alternative green fuels (including sustainable biofuels, green methanol and e-/bio-LNG) and securing the shore-power capability of the entire fleet.
To achieve these targets, TUI Cruises has defined a clear schedule that comprises numerous measures. For instance, in the near term we will extend our use of green shore power as well as the blending of biofuels. In parallel, we will set up collaborations to procure green fuels. In addition, TUI Cruises will not commission any further heavy fuel-oil vessels. In the medium term, pilot projects for net-zero technologies are to be implemented, existing ships are to be retrofitted to run on e-fuels, and supply structures for sustainable fuels such as e-/bio-LNG and green methanol are to be expanded. The longer term measures planned for 2040 to 2050 include using e-/bio-LNG for ships fitted with gas engines, an exclusive commitment to net-zero ship newbuilds, and phasing out fossil bunker fuels.
First fleet operator with externally validated, science-based climate tragets
Science-based climate targets (SBTs) for TUI Cruises have already been successfully defined. These were tested and validated by the independent SBTi; this initiative is supported by the WWF and the UN Global Compact among others and pursues the goal of making globalization more environmentally and socially sustainable.
In collaboration with the TUI Group, we submitted our self-imposed climate-protection targets to the SBTi for comprehensive verification. At the beginning of 2023, this process was successfully completed; the SBTi confirmed our targets are aligned with the today´s scientific understanding of climate change. By 2030, the emissions of TUI cruise companies (TUI Cruises and Marella Cruises) are to be reduced by a total of 27.5 percent compared to the 2019 base year. These binding and absolute CO₂ reduction targets are currently unique in the cruise sector.
The SBTi promotes ambitious climate action in the private sector by empowering companies to set science-based emissions reduction targets. The SBTi is a partnership between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
